Marketing Tips from 2 Kids with a Mower

As a business consultant I’m always looking at practical strategies for business and I’ve found that there are lessons all around us. Youth in particular can be very insightful if we watch, listen and learn.

Over the weekend two kids (teens) knocked on my door. They had a mower and they wanted to cut the grass.

  • Biz Tip #1: See a need and solve a problem.

I was hesistant and apparently they could tell. Immediately they said, “We’ll do a good job!

  • Biz Tip #2: Help assure your prospects and/or clients that they will be satisfied.

I told them I believed they would, but I didn’t have any cash on me. They then responded, “We take checks!” Needless to say, I took the gamble.

  • Biz Tip #3: Make it easy for clients to buy from you.
  • Biz Tip #4: Overcome objections.
  • Biz Tip #5: Make the sale.

Later something happened to their mower just as they were finishing up, so one of the boys came to the door to tell me what was going on and then said, “2 things while we wait”. He gave me his business card, told me of the other services he offered and asked if I wanted to get rid of an old mower he noticed in the yard.

  • Biz Tip #6: Keep your clients informed.
  • Biz Tip #7: Market additional services to current clients.
  • Biz Tip #8: Find ways to help your clients by solving more problems.

Take a look at this list and ask yourself, Am I doing these things? Revist each tip and ask a corresponding question of yourself and your business. Minor course correction may be just the thing to make your current strategies more effective.
