5 Simple Strategies to Maximize Conference Results

Let’s face it! A Conference is an exciting, adrenaline producing event.

Think about it. You’re roaming your email box, the internet, or some social media site and you see an advertised conference. There’s a big name attached, some interesting content, and someone you follow or know is hosting. “Ooooh”, you say to yourself as you click to see the schedule of events, the lineup of speakers and the dates. You’re instantly checking your calendar and your budget before you’ve taken a step back to ask yourself one critical question.

Before you know it, you’ve paid the fee and you’re booking your flight and hotel. You’re already geeked thinking about the break from your schedule, all the new people you’re going to meet and the information you’ll gather that will support you in business.

Fast forward two weeks or two months. It’s time. You arrive at the conference and it’s everything you thought it would be. The connections were amazing, the content was fabulous and the speakers were informative and entertaining. You pack your bags after an exhaustive but natural high, then you get back to your office.

Now what? The Blank Stare

Blank Stare after Conference Attendance
You sit at your desk with a blank stare.

The question you need to ask before you go to the conference is how do I integrate what I learn into my business and life?

That’s the question you have to answer before you go to your next conference. If you don’t, you’ll find much of your investment of time and money was a waste.

5 Strategies to Maximize Conference Results

  1. Purpose – Have a clear intent and purpose in mind before you get to the event. In what ways does this conference meet your current needs?
  2. Prep – Get ready before you get there. Take a look at who’s speaking, workshops you want to attend, people you want to meet, questions you have, etc. This keeps you focused and less distracted once you get there.
  3. Pick the right workshops – Make sure the workshops you attend are aligned with your purpose or else you’ll just feel distracted and torn once you get back to the office. Why does this workshop feel important? Can you put the information to immediate use?
  4. Prioritize—Schedule time right after the event is over to organize yourself – If you’re traveling to your conference there will be all types of things to do right after so the best thing to do is to schedule time before you leave the conference site to organize some of your ideas. What’s top priority?
  5. Plan – Create an action plan to put the information you’ve gotten to use right away.
